What is wellness and why you should start seeking it now!

Health and wellness are similar words but with different applications in life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."


On the other hand, wellness is considered an active process-oriented by intentions, choices and actions aiming for a holistic state of wellbeing.


Wellness goes beyond just physical health, which is why it’s important to remember that there are six dimensions of wellness. There’s far more to your health than just how you look or how much you can lift. By balancing all six dimensions of wellness, you can improve your overall health and feel happier and more fulfilled by the process.


Here are the six dimensions of wellness and how to get started on each one.


The concept of wellness


We can think of wellness as a process, rather than an outcome. It’s about balancing your mental and physical health with your spiritual and social well-being in a way that helps you to sustain a healthy life (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually).


The 6 dimensions of wellness:


1) Physical wellness

To create a path toward optimal health, you should identify a personal goal or two and map out steps you can take right now toward reaching that goal. If your overall goal is to be healthier, make it more concrete by picking measurable benchmarks: Cardiovascular endurance? A more toned body? Being able to carry my grandkids without pain? Make it happen!

Physical wellness is all about nourishing your body through exercise and healthy habits.


2) Emotional wellness

Having a strong mindset and taking control of your emotions is key to a healthy and stable life. Being able to express your feelings while you consider other’s point of view are signs of emotional wellness.

By developing the skills to balance our feelings, and controlling our stress during difficult situations, we start to become stronger from the inside-out


3) Social wellness

Healthy relationships are a major contributor to overall wellness. A strong support system can help you feel more fulfilled and healthier in every area of your life. It’s important that you spend time with friends and family, participate in community events, and volunteer at local charity groups.

These activities not only help strengthen social bonds but also brings you the feeling of meaning and belonging.


4) Spiritual wellness

This relates to a person’s purpose and mission in life. A good way to start improving your spiritual wellness is by searching through your beliefs and check if it’s aligned with your current mindset.

Perhaps you tend toward negativity and pessimism; in that case, you might want to make an effort toward positivity.


5) Mental wellness

Feeling good about yourself and being able to handle stress appropriately are incredibly important for overall health. Feeling confident about your work, relationships, hobbies, and appearance all contribute to your mental health. Healthy habits and the help from a professional can always help to overcome low self-esteem or depression.

The better you feel about yourself, the healthier you will be, both physically and mentally.


6) Environmental wellness

Just as a single unhealthy ingredient in your food can make you sick, it’s important to evaluate your surroundings as well. If your environment isn’t healthy, neither are you! Pay attention to your surroundings at home or when working. Make sure they are support your overall well-being.

The air we breathe and the environment we spend our time have just as much influence on our bodies as what we eat and drink.
