In-person, hybrid, or online personal training. Which one is for me?

Updated: Sep 7, 2022

With so many different ways to workout, how do you know which type of personal training to choose?

Those who can afford having a personal trainer for every exercise session can benefit from the adaptability and safety it can provide with great results.

However, if you’re not a beginner and you would like to have the knowledge and experience of an in-person trainer, online or hybrid personal training can still give you benefits with the added convenience of being able to schedule your sessions and perform your plan whenever and wherever it’s most convenient for you.

Online Personal Training

The popularity of online personal training has exploded recently, especially after the surging of COVID-19 and the lockdown experience.

With online personal training, if you don’t have time to make it to your local gym during peak hours or off hours, it can provide an easy way to manage your schedule.

On top of that, with some exercising experience and the right choice of your online personal trainer, the workout can be very effective towards your goals.

Pros of online personal training

With an online personal trainer, you can workout whenever and wherever it’s convenient for you. Plus, you don’t have to make arrangements to meet your trainer in person - an awesome benefit if you're always on-the-go and not very organized.

Another advantage of online training is that you can do your workout from home; no matter how hectic your schedule gets, and at least your workout plan will remain consistent.

One more bonus of online training is that because they're not limited by time or space constraints, they can create custom workouts just for you without having to worry about how busy the gym is and whether a particular machine will be available. You can just start and go!

In-Person Personal Training

In-person personal training is a more traditional approach when hiring a professional for exercising guidance.

At a higher cost compared to other options, the client has their trainer following through every exercising session, explaining, demonstrating, and correcting form and posture.

In-person personal training can offer a wealth of benefits to both trainer and client and builds a greater connection between them.

This connection can influence in many aspects of your goals and be tremendously important for the safety and effectiveness of your workout plan.

Pros of in-person personal training

People that can count with their trainer during the session have a larger range of exercises and possibilities, making it easier to switch or adapt movements immediately when necessary.

Trainers that watch their clients’ movements during all exercises can greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Additionally, when trainers spend more time with their clients, the synergy between them becomes greater and it is easier for both to find a successful strategy when it comes to physical activity. In other words, the pace of results is often faster when you have the trainer with you in every workout session.

Hiring an in-person personal trainer can be very motivating to overcome limits and plateaus. This can be great for your goals and very inspiring!

In general, beginners and people with exercising limitations report to feel safer in the presence of their trainers when compared to exercising by themselves.

Hybrid Personal Training

As the name suggests, the hybrid personal trainer uses online resources as well as in-person sessions to help you meet your goals.

Similar to online option, the trainer will put together a detailed plan and give you guidelines on how to properly exercise; however, with hybrid training there are fewer visits in person [usually one visit per month or whenever the workout plan is updated].

With the help of technology, hybrid trainers can keep in touch with their clients even though they don’t train them every day.

Pros of hybrid training

One of the greatest benefits of hybrid training is convenience; it’s a nice middle ground between in-person training sessions and online personal training.

When you’re busy with work or children, having someone there to help stay accountable can be helpful—particularly when it comes to sticking to a plan that might be difficult to follow at home.

In addition, a hybrid personal training program can add layer of support when it comes to building confidence and tackling challenging exercises [especially those involving weights] while it becomes more affordable when compared to in-person programs.
